BRET MICHAELS To Take 'Next Several Months Off' From Touring 'To Heal And Get Back To 100%' Following His Recent Surgeries
August 22, 2026POISON frontman Bret Michaels has announced that he will take "the next several months off" from touring "to heal and get back to 100%" following his recent surgeries.
Back in late July, Bret said that he was instructed by doctors to take three to four weeks off to recuperate until a stent is removed following an "immediate complicated obstructing kidney stone surgery."
Michaels and the rest of his solo band played their first show following his surgery on Friday, August 21 at The Bowl at Sugar Hill, Sugar Hill, Georgia. A short clip of the performance can be seen below.
Earlier today (Saturday, August 22),Bret's social media was updated with the following message: "Following Bret Michaels' attempted show at The Bowl at Sugar Hill, doctors and paramedics determined immediately after the show that he still needs additional rest and recovery from his recent surgeries. Bret will be taking the next several months off to heal and get back to 100%.
"Our deepest apologies from Michaels Entertainment Group, as we were truly looking forward to the rest of this year's shows, including The Mountain music festival, private events and all the great shows coming up. We now look ahead to 2027 and to Bret being able to return healthy, strong and ready to rock."
Michaels's physician, Abby Borhan, M.D. and Dr. Patel stated: "We will be pulling Bret off the road. He wanted to attempt this show, but we feel there is a much-needed period of rest and slow recovery ahead, especially considering the heat and humidity during the summer months and the effect it can have on his blood sugar levels."
When Bret originally postponed some of his summer 2026 tour dates due to his health, he explained that he "experienced severe kidney pain following his recent performance honoring our military heroes and their families" in Spokane, Washington on July 18. The following day, he was diagnosed with "a complicated obstructing kidney stone," which required immediate surgery.
Dr. Borhan then successfully placed a ureteral stent during the procedure, later noting that Michaels's recovery was complicated by his lifelong Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis.
"Because Type 1 Diabetes inherently compromises the immune system and impairs healing, he faces an exceptionally high risk of contracting a serious UTI or developing urosepsis, a blood infection, until the stent is removed," Dr. Borhan said in a July 22 statement. "The demanding nature of a high-intensity tour schedule makes it impossible to maintain the sterile environments, strict hydration schedules, frequent rest, and precise blood glucose management required for his safe recovery."
In July 2025, Michaels spoke about rearranging his touring schedule following a diabetes scare that happened amid a pre-show meet-and-greet.
"Unfortunately, the highs and lows of living with diabetes since I've been 6 years old occasionally just kick my butt," he said at the time, recalling his blood sugar was "a real-life 39." (According to the Centers For Disease Control And Prevention (CDC) severe low blood sugar is below 54 mg/dL.)
"I vow in the near future, I'm going to take that time needed, and please forgive me if I have to move some of the shows around until I get this under control," Michaels added.
In April, Bret told SiriusXM's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk" that he and his POISON bandmates were "hoping" to go back on tour in 2027, "'cause I know it's a big question. I think — I really strongly think '27, without going into details yet, is going to be a good reunion year for POISON. I think it's gonna be awesome," he said.
This past January, Bret denied that POISON's proposed 40th-anniversary tour fell through because he allegedly wanting more money. During an interview with "Chaz & AJ In The Morning" on 99.1 WPLR, Michaels teased that POISON's 2027 tour could be called "40 Plus One", since it would happen on the 41st anniversary of the band's debut album, "Look What the Cat Dragged In".
POISON last hit the road in 2022 when it supported MÖTLEY CRÜE and DEF LEPPARD on a massive stadium tour. After that tour ended, Michaels went back to performing sporadic shows — consisting almost entirely of POISON hits — with his solo band.
